New Bike Path Plan Gets Mixed Reviews

Bicyclists in the Los Angeles area have been promised an increase in bike lanes and networks over the years, with disappointing results, but a new plan is in the works that could give local cyclists safer access to the roads.

The plan, which is scheduled to be completed in about 30 years, is expected to add 1,680 miles of bike paths and networks to the area - which would be four times the current amount of local cycling paths.

Among cycling advocates, reviews about the new plan are mixed. Some cycling enthusiasts, like Glenn Bailey of the Bicycle Advisory Committee, believe that the plan's execution has not been impressive so far. In an interview with the Daily News, Bailey said the new downtown bike lane is not up to par and will not keep cyclists safe.

"I rode it two days after it opened, and it was a mess," he said. "There were tire tracks all along it, and it was already peeling."

On the other hand, some cyclists are more enthusiastic about the plan.

"There is always more the city could be doing," Alexis Lantz of the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition told the Daily News. "That is a given, but, in general, this is an exciting time with all the attention being given to bicycles."

Bicycle Laws

The new bike paths will go a long way toward keeping local cyclists safe, but California also requires bike riders to do their part to avoid accidents. By law, cyclists must:

  • use a bicycle helmet when riding on a public road if they are younger than 18 years old
  • use lights and reflectors when driving at night, such as a front lamp with a white light that can be seen from 300 feet away and a red rear reflector that can be seen from 500 feet away
  • have brakes on their bicycles that can stop the wheels on dry, clean pavement
  • avoid riding their bikes when under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • stop at all traffic lights and stop signs

Cycling Safety Tips

In addition to following the California laws, there are other tips that cyclists can use to avoid bicycle accidents, such as:

  • riding with the flow of traffic
  • wearing bright clothing that makes them more visible
  • not wearing headphones when riding
  • keeping up with maintenance to keep the bike working efficiently
